When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, as Christmas Day and New Year's Day does this year, the closure applies to the next business day. As such, Canadian post offices will be closed, and there will be no collection or delivery of mail, on Monday, Dec. 26 and Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011 and Monday, Jan 2, 2012. Refer to Canada Post Public Holiday Schedule. Our post office also does not have outgoing mail on weekends

To reduce risk of loss during this period, effective Friday, December 16th, we will not be shipping any orders until next year.

We will also be taking a break during the last week of December.

We are starting to process orders that were being held (waiting for postal service to resume) in preparation of getting these in the mail on Tuesday.

We are hoping with the backlog of mail and the few postal workers who are not happy, they won't delay the mail too long.

Canada Post has shut down its operations nationwide after nearly two weeks of rotating strikes and (months of) failed negotiations with its union.

As of today, we are no longer shipping any orders.

If this continues, we will look at alternative shipping methods.

Both sides have to give 72 hours strike or lockout notice, however, it can take them up to 4 days to get our parcels out of the country. So we are still holding orders.

Possible Canada Post strike delays shipments

With the threat of a postal strike hanging over our heads, we decided that May 17th would be our last day of putting parcels into the mail system.

By doing so, we are hoping that Canada Post can manage to at least get our parcels to the border prior to the possible strike date (they will be in a strike position on May 25).

News is sparse and not very reliable, with posturing on both sides of the table, factual news is difficult to establish.

If there is not a strike next week we will have to decide on the quality of their service as I am sure there will be continued work slowdowns (which we are currently experiencing).

We will not let Canada Post jeopardize our business or disappoint our customers, and will only start shipping once we are comfortable with the postal service standards.

Bullet Pens - Twist vs Clicker

I was recently asked "what was the main difference between these two styles of pen". Face it, they are both a very unique pen and they both fit your hand comfortably and have excellent balance and weight for writing.

Our twist style pens might have a little more "show" with their 24-karat gold plating on the end caps and pocket clips.

But the main advantage of a clicker style retractable pen, is that it will take only one hand to use the clicker to retract the pen, whereas on a twist style pen, you would need two hands to twist the pen to retract it. This makes it much easier for those who will use their pen a lot in their profession; such as police or military operations, delivery drivers, service industry personnel, etc.

What type of products can we send to the UK?

Look for items that are made using the heads (the ends) of rifle, pistol cases or shotgun shells. If the product looks like real ammunition; ie case with bullet, then we can't ship there.

Do we have rush delivery to the US?

The postal service in Canada is very different compared to USPS. Where we are located, we also do not have access to rush/overnight service.

We could send an order by Expedited Parcel USA, the cost starts at a minimum of $15, but is not an option at this time.

The next service up (1 or 2 days faster) is Xpresspost USA and the cost starts at $26 and up.

And even with these costly services, Canada Post does not even guarantee delivery to the USA. This is why we don't usually mention or offer a rush delivery.

Perseids Meteor Shower

The biggest and brightest meteor shower of 2010 will light up skies across the country tonight, this being the Perseids Meteor Shower.

As long as the skies are clear, the chances of a spectacular display are very high. Astronomers estimate that 60 plus meteors could be visible each hour following sunset tonight.

The Earth's orbit has already entered the outer debris field of the comet, which means that shooting stars should be visible for those who exercise some patience and who live far from major sources of light pollution.

It is said that tonight is the best night to watch the dazzling show because there will be no moon in the sky. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight.

Sarah of Canadian+Handmade contacted us to let us know that we were a featured post. She found our site the other day, and was intrigued by all the ways we use bullets and casings. Fridge Magnets - Temporarily Sold Out

The Rare-Earth Magnets we use for these are on order, but they were sold out and went on back order. The size we use was the only one on back order (isn't that always the way).

Canadian Tax Changes - Effective July 1, 2010

Ontario and British Columbia are joining the harmonized sales tax (HST) framework. Beginning July 1, 2010, existing provincial sales taxes in those provinces will be combined with the federal goods and services tax to create the HST.

There is actually no additional cost to Ontario as we have always been required to collect 8% PST along with 5% GST, the two taxes have just been combined into the one HST.

There is an increase to B.C. as we previously were only required to collect 5% GST.

The HST rate in Nova Scotia will be increasing from 13% to 15% (5% federal and 10% provincial).

In Summary, effective July 1, 2010 the follow taxes will be charged on orders sent to Canadian destinations:

B.C. 12 % HST
Ontario 13% HST
New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador $ 13% HST (no changes)
Nova Scotia 15% HST
All other provinces 5% GST (no changes)

Effective January 11, 2010 postage rates are going up.

We are able to keep the same S&H rates for:

Canada by Other Letter Mail $ 2.00
USA by Light Packet $ 3.00

The following S&H rates will increase by .30c:

USA by Small Packet Air (was $7.25) will be $ 7.55
USA by Small Packet Air (was $9.50) will be $ 9.80
USA by Small Packet Air (was $14.00) will be $14.30

The following S&H rates are unknown at this time:

Canada by Expedited Parcel
USA by Expedited Parcel USA

The rates are not given out in advance and can only be determined once the Canada Post website switches over. I am sure there will be a slight increase.

These prices will go into effect for orders placed from Jan 8, as these orders go in the mail on Monday, Jan 11 when the new prices are in effect.

Petrified Wood Pen Holder

I find I continually say how we have the best customers. Here is yet another example.

We met this new customer earlier last year and he purchased our Bullet Pens. During our conversations, he mentioned that he hand crafted these beautiful pen holders made from petrified wood taken from his own property, and then adding the antlers.

Imagine our surprise when this beautiful pen holder (pictured above) arrived in the mail, along with an additional smaller piece we could use as a paper weight.

Sometimes it just seems like your order is taking forever to arrive. But it really isn't. I thought I would post this explanation with a calendar for a visual, to help you better understand days in transit.

Our Order Confirmation and Shipment Confirmation emails both include our estimated number of business days it may take for your order to arrive.

Definition of a business day: A business day does not include the day of shipping (commonly referred to as Day 0), weekends, or holidays where there is no postal service.

Example #1

Your order was in the mail on December 7th:

- Day of Mailing: Monday, December 7
- Estimated Arrival Time: 12 business days
- Your order may arrive on Wednesday, December 23

How did we arrive at that date? The day of mailing (referred to as Day 0 by carriers) is never counted, so this means that we don't start counting until Tuesday, December 8th. Weekends are also not counted, so December 12, 13, and for this example, Dec 19 and 20 are also not counted.

Example #2 (with holidays)

Your order was in the mail on December 18th:

- Day of Mailing: Friday, December 18
- Estimated Arrival Time: 9 business days
- Your order may arrive on Monday, January 4

How did we arrive at that date? The day of mailing (referred to as Day 0 by carriers) is never counted, so this means that we don't start counting until Monday, December 21st. Weekends are also not counted, so December 19 and 20, and for this example, Dec 26 and 27 and Jan 2 and 3, are also not counted. There is no USPS postal service on Dec 25 or Jan 1 (two holidays), so those days are not counted as well.

If your parcel doesn't arrive exactly on the anticipated day of arrival, the estimated days in transit DO NOT include the following situations which are outside of our control:

Winter Weather Warning

We have a snowfall warning in effect, expecting anywhere from 15 to 35 cm of snow, with high winds as well. The majority of this will happen tomorrow, although the snow has started already.

Normally weather like this doesn't affect most people, but here bad weather can cause problems.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that we don't lose our power or internet connection (which we can lose during bad weather).

If you are expecting to hear from us and you don't, we are probably out of service.

One more thing that will cause further delays on your order.

It is difficult most times to estimate the arrival time of mail as transit times vary with delays in postal service or any custom or border delays. When we add on the increase in holiday mail volume, it makes it even more unpredictable.

Winter has arrived full time...

We haven't had a lot of snow, but it's been slowly adding up over the last few days, a few days of flurries and now we are into snow, and it is a wet and heavy snow.

We've had one short power outage, and today we just lost our high speed cable. this is so typical here. I've been struggling with trying to operate on dial up * sigh * and will probably lose that shortly too.

But at least the snow makes it look pretty out! :-)

If you don't hear from us for awhile, not to worry, our server is usually pretty good at restoring service.

Every so often we have trouble getting through to our customers who have a Yahoo email address.

It appears it is that time again.

I am not sure if these emails are just not delivered by Yahoo or suddenly most incoming emails end up in a spam folder.

If you have a Yahoo email address and have not heard from us, either looking for our Order Confirmation email or a reply to your inquiry, be sure to check your spam folder, and if our email is not there, contact us back again.

Power outage to start the week

We had our first "real" snow yesterday, and it was a heavy, wet snow. By real snow I mean snow that stayed on the ground :-)

We woke up this morning to no power (it was probably tree branches falling on power lines).

We just got our power back on now, so we are a little behind today ... what a great way to start the week!
